Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Richard Plugge, CEO of the Jumbo-Visma cycling team, and Lex Daniels, the CEO and co-creator behind the popular Relive app. Joining them was Riejanne Markus, a standout cyclist from the Jumbo-Visma women’s team.

The meeting, which took place in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), brought together key players from the worlds of technology, cycling, and fitness. But what exactly prompted it? Here are a few possible scenarios:

Cutting-Edge Technology in Sports

Jumbo-Visma is renowned for its scientific and data-driven approach to cycling. Richard Plugge ‘tweeted’ that they discussed how they use technology in cycling and their Foodcoach app.

Could Jumbo-Visma be looking to harness Apple’s tech prowess for an even more competitive edge?

It’s clear that Plugge is keen on meeting with Cook as he wrote: “Next time on the bike!”

Exploring New Partnerships

Speculation has been rife that Apple could become the new sponsor for the Jumbo-Visma cycling team.

I don’t think that this scenario is likely. We previously saw a few “tech-giant-powered” cycling teams (Garmin-Sharp, Team Dimension Data…).

However, Apple is very careful about the companies and activities it associates with.

Unique Cycling Know-How

Apple has recently integrated power meters and third-party sensor support into their Apple Watch through WatchOS 10. I’ve been wondering if this meeting might take place to further enhance this integration.

Although the current integration is already very good, adding new useful functionality, analytics, and more is still possible.

Health and Fitness Revolution

During the meeting, Riejanne Markus, a cyclist from the Jumbo-Visma women’s team, spoke about the team’s “Food Coach” app.

This app plays a crucial role in optimizing athletes’ performance through nutrition. Markus even invited Tim Cook to attend one of their races next year, indicating a potential interest in collaborating on fitness and health-related initiatives.

The Future of Outdoor Experiences

Lex Daniels, the CEO and co-founder of Relive, is known for his innovative approach to outdoor experiences. He mainly discussed his Relive app with Cook and even provided a demo of the latest Relive product.

And based on the picture, it seems Tim liked it!

Could Apple and Relive be considering synergies in the world of outdoor apps?

While the exact nature of their discussions remains between them and those around them, seeing these prominent figures from technology and sports has sparked intense curiosity about potential future collaborations.

Whether it’s the evolution of cycling or shaping the future of health and fitness apps, one thing is certain: Eindhoven’s meeting of the minds promises exciting developments.
