What were your expectations for your new bike before purchasing the CTY 1.2?
Before getting this bike, I rode mountain bikes with heavy basic components and carbon frames. However, I wanted to push myself beyond 15 miles and explore more, so I decided to check out gravel/hybrid bikes.
Have you bought the bike online or in REI’s store?
In the spring of 2022, REI had the bike in stock, and I was able to test it out (pre-assembled) before making my purchase. Thanks to the well-padded handlebars and seat, I was impressed with how smooth and comfortable it felt.
What “perks” or services did you get from REI?
One thing I particularly liked was the concept of the REI credit, which I can use towards future purchases (including accessories bought in-store or online). Additionally, the discount for bike maintenance during the first year was a big plus for me.
For what type of riding do you use this bike the most?
I typically use the bike for long rides; the farthest I’ve gone in one go is about 65 miles (105 km).
That’s impressive! How would you describe its riding characteristics?
This bike is easily capable of handling smooth and bumpy roads and even some off-road terrain (when dry).
How comfortable is it on a scale from 1 to 10?
Overall, this bike is very comfortable, and the seat and gear changes are smooth (8/10). The only issue I’ve noticed is that the handlebar, as it’s wider than what’s typical, can get in the way at times.
What is your overall feeling from the ride?
It’s my go-to bike for now, and with how comfortable it is, I end the ride because I have to due to running out of daylight, not because of tushie pain.
Are you having trouble with cross-chaining due to the 3X drivetrain?
I don’t have much trouble with it since I consider myself an experienced cyclist. However, I can understand how it could be an issue for beginners. To avoid cross-chaining, remember not to use the lightest gear in the front and the hardest gear in the rear (and vice versa).
Is there something you don’t like about it?
The tires would be the weakest link for me, so I plan on switching them out soon. With new tires, I might even be able to do more off-roading.
What do you like the most about it?
The comfort of this bike is excellent and makes it ideal for longer rides, whether it’s for commuting or pleasure.
