From the exhilarating races to the lucrative contracts, this article will not only break down the salaries of elite road cyclists but also take a nostalgic look back at previous years to witness the financial evolution of these cycling superstars.

Remember, the salaries don’t include bonuses or prize money and are based on estimations. These can multiply the annual earnings.

NOTE: According to Jonathan Vaughters, former professional cyclist and manager of WorldTeam EF Education–EasyPost, many of the reported salaries in the media are incorrect.

¹I don’t think this estimate is correct based on Tom’s €2,7M salary in 2024 and salaries of other cyclists in 2023.

Updated on the 7th of July, 2025.

As you can see from the chart above, it is missing two cyclists who have been regulars in the past years. Chris Froome, who never really picked up his previous form due to his injury in 2019, and Peter Sagan, who retired in 2023.

Chris’s contract was one of the least profitable for the team in terms of results. Chris earned €4.5-5.5M per year, but his racing results didn’t match it. We can only debate how this move paid off marketing-wise.

Peter was earning €5.5M per year from 2020 to 2023 and has long been one of the highest-paid cyclists ever. This salary was reportedly contributed to the team by Specialized, a company with which Peter has close ties.

In 2024, most of the major riders, except for Tadej Pogačar, have improved their salaries. For example, Primož Roglič went from €2.9M to €4.5M after moving from Jumbo-Visma to Bora-hansgrohe, Jonas Vingegaard from €2.5M to €4.0M, or Mathieu van der Poel from €2M to €4M. I’ll elaborate on all of them below.

According to the Total Velo report, Tom Pidcock was to receive 4 million Euros in 2023. However, this amount appears to be incorrect, as the 2024 report states €2.7 million.

1. Tadej Pogačar: A Jewel that Needs to Be Protected

Tadej Pogačar is one of the most talented riders in both the present and the history of cycling. He is often compared, for example, to Eddy Merckx. It is, therefore, no wonder that the UAE Team Emirates respects him and signed him until 2027, and later extended this contract until 2030. His salary was also increased from €6M per year to €8.3M (€50M/6 years). What’s also interesting is the buyout clause. To buy Tadej out of his contract, you would need to pay €200 million!

2. Remco Evenepoel

According to HLN.be, Remco Evenepoel was offered €10 million by the team Redbull-Bora-Hansgrohe for 2025 and onwards. It’s rumored this is supposed to be a 2-year contract, resulting in €5M/year salary. However, he rejected this offer (maybe also because of the obstacles set by his team boss, Patrick Lefevre). Still, he increased his salary to €5M/year in Soudal-Quick Step, moving Remco to 2nd place among the best-paid cyclists.

3. Primož Roglič: “Old” but Gold

Although Primož Roglič can be considered “old” by cycling standards, he still brings valuable results to his team. In 2024, he won Critérium du Dauphiné and La Vuelta a España GC and multiple stages. He has long been riding for Jumbo-Visma (now Team Visma-Lease a Bike), but since 2024, he has been riding for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. This is reflected in his salary as well. From €2 million in 2022 and €2.9 million in 2023 in Jumbo-Visma, his salary increased to €4.5 million, catapulting him to the second-best-earning cyclist in 2024. Deserved? Absolutely.

4. Jonas Vingegaard: From “Zero” to Hero

When looking at the historical data, I noticed that Jonas Vingegaard is one of the biggest leapers. Rumors state that in 2022, the year he won his first Tour de France, he was only supposed to receive €500,000 a year. However, in 2023, the amount was €2.5 million per year, and by 2024, it had already increased to €4 million. No wonder the Visma-Lease a Bike team values him so highly. After all, he is one of the best GC riders.

5. Mathieu van der Poel: Underpaid Champion?

Mathieu van der Poel | Source: Sirotti

There is no doubt about Mathieu van der Poel’s versatility. However, many doubted his €2 million salary from previous years. Despite his excellent results, he was paid much less than his competitors. “Fortunately,” in 2024, he doubled his salary. He is reportedly receiving €4 million. That already sounds like an adequate reward for his results in classics, cyclocross, or world championships. Additionally, he closed a 10-year deal with Canyon.

Conclusion

What do you think about cyclists’ salaries? Do you find them adequate compared to other athletes? Which cyclists do you think are undervalued, and which ones are overvalued? Let me know in the comments.

Compared to the salaries in say football, American Football and basketball, the salaries that these top athletes receive is poor but paradoxically more than I thought.
The salaries paid to the run of the mill professionals is dismal.
It certainly does not reflect the commitment required or the level of risk riders run.
cycling is a popular sport but does not receive a commensurate level of coverage than the aforementioned sports.
Maybe the UCI should do something to improve that, rather than focusing on rules, sanctions, suspensions and fines
