The third generation of the popular Lún HYPER wheels recently appeared on winspace.jp. They were also showcased by Charles Ouimet, who discovered them at the Sea Otter Classic. So, how do they differ from the 2nd generation from 2023, and how much they cost? You will find out this and much more below, or you can read my Lún HYPER 3 review.
HYPER 3 was launched on the 29th of May, 2024, and costs $1699. (Source)
In short, here are the differences between HYPER 2 (2023) and HYPER 3:
- HYPER 3 have wider spokes and rim width (21mm vs. 23mm).
- HYPER 3 are about 45g lighter (see the table below for more info).
- HYPER 3 are only available for disc brakes.
- HYPER 3 should be ‘2.2W faster,’ at 48 km/h.
- HYPER 3 should have 10% higher lateral stiffness.
- HYPER 3 have a titanium ratchet.
- HYPER 3 no longer have the butterfly finish.
- HYPER 3 are more expensive (1499 USD vs. 1699 USD).
Wider rims are a step forward, in my opinion, as wider tires (28mm, 30mm, or even 32mm) are becoming more trendy. Wider rims allow for a better tire-rim transition with wider tires. However, I think this width and low demand for rim brakes also contributed to the decision not to introduce HYPER 3 for rim brakes (for now). Another thing to point out is the rather narrow external rim width of only 28.4mm on D45 and 28.3mm on D67. An external rim width of around 30mm would be more appropriate for the internal rim width of 23mm.
The lower weight is worthy of admiration, but we are talking about marginal gains here. As well as the 2.2W savings at 48 km/h. The question is, what was the testing protocol? Winspace should publish the wind tunnel data “in the following weeks.”
Personally, I already found the HYPER 2023 SE very stiff (after the Lún MEGA, the stiffest wheels I’ve tested so far), so the additional 10% stiffness may be counterproductive, especially for ride comfort.
HYPER 3 doesn’t have a butterfly finish, which was one of the main reasons many people decided to buy HYPER wheels. The new finish is matte, similar to the HYPER SE.
Ratchet rings are made of titanium instead of steel in HYPER 3. I’m curious how this will affect durability. Winspace states “lifetime” use. Well, we’ll see.
At the same time, the price went up by $200 to $1699 mark. That’s already quite a lot, and many people will definitely consider whether they’d rather buy wheels from Western brands.
The table below shows a comparison of the weights of Lún wheels.

Comparison of weights of Lún (Winspace) wheels with information about the rim depths and spoke type.
Updated on July 16, 2025.
And here are some pictures of the HYPER 3 wheels.

If you already have HYPER 2023 or similar wheels, I don’t think you should upgrade. The improvements are marginal and probably not worth it for most people.

I’m puzzled why they made 23mm width with below rather narrow outer diameter means that we could only run 25mm or less tire width to avoid the ballooning or 107% rule. may you can share your thoughts on these.
Hyper Gen 3, Outer width: D33, D45=28.4mm, D67=28.3mm (copied from .jp website)
The new elite wheels went a bit overboard with 31.8mm outer width but we still could run 28mm/30mm while still getting the aero benefit.
Good point, Wei. Honestly, it’s hard to say. It is possible that the specs are not final and may be updated. But I think the probability is low. An outer rim width of around 30mm would be more appropriate. I’ve updated the paragraph regarding the rim width based on your comment. Thank you for pointing this out.
