Magene revealed a new semi-wireless 2×12spd road groupset at Shanghai’s 2024 China International Bicycle Fair. I have limited information from one of my sources. However, I’ve been told that the groupset will be available for both rim and disc brakes, with the unique feature of using the same shifters for both.

The photos of the groupset resemble the popular design of the Shimano 105 series. It has “hidden buttons” like the Shimano D-Fly, but not on the top of the derailleur, but on the inside.

The shifter can be converted for disc brakes, accommodating cyclists’ varied preferences. It allows a cable to be connected to the lever to the hydraulic cylinder. Only the cylinder is needed when using hydraulic brakes (see the last picture). The hole on top is for the mechanical brake cable. The hydraulic brake hose goes to the traditional location below.

The groupset is expected to be released this year in China and next year in the rest of the world. This upcoming release signifies Magene’s strategic effort to challenge the dominance of established players like Shimano and SRAM in the cycling industry. The growing competition from Chinese road groupsets, such as those from Ltwoo, Sensah, and Wheeltop, cannot be ignored.

However, I wonder if there has been any patent infringement, as the Magene groupset appears to be a close copy of Shimano. I’m glad some manufacturers are trying to compete with established brands (after all, 70% of road bikes in 2023 were equipped with their groupsets), but they should respect patents and show some originality. On the other hand, excessive market dominance usually isn’t good for consumers due to high prices.

I assume that Magene will also integrate their P505 power meters into the groupset. This would enhance the groupset’s functionality and match (or maybe even surpass) some competitors.

It costs 4799 CNY or 670 USD.
As for global release date I believe they will release it before the end of the year.
