I could not start this selection with any other cream than the one from Chamois Butt’r. This American company is one of the pioneers in the market of chamois creams.
Their Chamois Butt’r Original Anti-Chafe Cream is one of the most popular chamois creams for cycling on the market.
It offers a non-greasy structure that does not damage clothing and is easy to wash. But most importantly, it provides enough relief for stressed areas.
The cream does not contain phthalates, gluten, or artificial fragrances. And if you like coconut, you will love this cream because it has a coconut smell!
2. Gooch Guard Chamois Cream
The US-made Gooch Guard Chamois Cream does not contain parabens, petroleum, or any other common allergens such as soy, tree nuts, etc. It consists of natural ingredients only.
This cream is perfect for you to prevent chafing during long bike rides, half marathon, full marathon, or any activity during which you experience chafing.
Gooch Guard has a fresh and decent smell.
3. Assos Chamois Cream
When somebody talks about chamois creams, the Assos chamois cream is one of the first associations they can think of. A lot of pro riders use it because of its high quality and long-lasting effects.
This cream by Assos is a true competitor for the place on my list. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation effects. It does not damage clothing and does have a very decent touch of a mint smell.
The only downside is that it is a bit more expensive than most of the chamois creams out there.
4. DZNuts Pro Chamois Cream
The DZNuts Pro Chamois Cream has all the features you want from a chamois cream. These include antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-chaffing, and wound-healing effects.
Compared to the rest of the chamois creams in my selection, this one is sold in various packaging sizes (1 pack, 2 pack, 4 pack) and with or without a microfiber towel.
It has a pleasant cooling effect, and there is also a variant for women (see more info below).
5. Muc-Off Luxury Chamois Cream

The cream also has antibacterial and anti-chafing effects. It is available in 2 different volumes (100ml and 250ml), and it has a pleasant smell. It smells sort of like a baby powder.
You can wash it out of your clothes easily. Feel free to take advantage of natural ingredients like aloe vera, witch hazel, sunflower oil, and shea butter.

The cream also does not contain any artificial substances, so it is friendly to your health and nature.
Why Use Chamois Cream?
We all know that bicycle saddles are not as comfortable as a cushioned sofa. Beginner cyclists are often discouraged by the pain caused by sitting on the bike. And that’s a pity. After all, cycling brings so many benefits.
Chamois cream is a cream designed for increasing the comfort of bike rides. You can apply it directly to your skin or on your bib shorts. The chamois cream reduces the friction between your skin and the shorts, which may lead to saddle sore (especially during long rides).
The chamois creams are available by different brands and come in different types. Most of the creams should provide you with a cooling, antibacterial, and anti-inflammation effect. I selected the best chamois creams in this blog post (see the list above), so you don’t have to spend time with the research.
TIP: If your saddle is not one of the most comfortable ones, try a gel bike seat cover. Here is my selection of the best gel bike seat covers.
How to Apply Chamois Cream?
Apply chamois cream directly to your skin – to the intimate parts or to the parts of your body where you chafe. You can also grease the cream on your cycling shorts.
Some cyclists use chamois cream for almost every bike ride. I use chamois cream for longer rides that take 2 or more hours, or if I ride a bike several days in a row.
If you are a woman, I recommend you watch the following video by Katie Kookaburra, a female cyclist who shares a very useful tip for women.
PRO TIP: If you experience chafing even after applying chamois cream, think about changing your shorts, saddle, or bike fit.
What Are the Best Chamois Cream Alternatives?
If you are allergic to some of the ingredients of chamois creams, you can use some of its alternatives. Based on my research among fellow cyclists, I can recommend the following chamois cream alternatives.
- Cocoa butter
- Shea butter
- Pre-bath oil
- Coconut oil
- Vaseline (body care gel)
- Pawpaw cream
- Aloe vera gel
- Rash cream
I believe you would be able to come up with more ideas and alternatives. But these are the most popular ones.
Chamois Cream History Is More Interesting Than You Think
Riding a bike was not always as comfortable as it is today. The first cycling shorts were made of cotton or wool. You can imagine that they were very uncomfortable for the riders. They caused itching and pain. The development of the shorts continued, and Castelli introduced the first padded, nonleather chamois in the 1980s. THANK YOU, CASTELLI! The Castelli shorts increased the comfort of the riders dramatically, and soon, other manufacturers followed.
TIP: If you are interested in the history of cycling shorts, I recommend reading the article from bicycling.com.
First chamois creams as we know them today were introduced in the 80s. Chamois Butt’r company is one of the pioneers of chamois creams. They developed their first creams in 1988. It was a collaboration of physical therapists and pro cyclist Steve Mathews, pro cyclists, physicians, and chemists. Later on, more and more brands introduced their own chamois creams to the market.
