Garmin has just introduced its highest-end smart trainer, the successor to NEO 2T, Tacx NEO 3M. It brings a few improvements, so let’s check them out and see if this trainer will be the next hit.
KEY TAKEAWAY
The main difference between the Tacx NEO 2T and the NEO 3M is that the 3M has integrated multidirectional movement, which improves ride comfort. Additionally, it seems that Garmin read my review of the NEO 2T, in which I criticized its poor portability due to the absence of a carry handle and the 3M now has one. The NEO 3M also comes with an 11-speed cassette. Most other features remained the same, except the price, which jumped to $1999.

Tacx NEO 3M: What’s New?
Below, I’ve summarized all the features that are new on the NEO 3M:
- Better accuracy (not ±1% but <1%): According to DC Rainmaker, the NEO 3M is crazy accurate
- Multidirectional motion for improved riding comfort and engagement
- 11-spd cassette included
- Added a carry handle for better portability
- Dual Bluetooth connection support
- Added network support via WiFi or Ethernet but only with an external adaptor
- Hardware button for pairing/reset
- LED indicator
- New electronics and an innovative cooling system
- Higher price ($1999)
Conclusion
Considering the $1999 price tag for the NEO 3M, it’s clear this is not a trainer for everyone. While it brings some improvements over the previous generation, I’m not sure it’s worth it, especially when the NEO 2T is discounted to $900.
Anyway, for now, I’m evaluating it from the perspective of someone who hasn’t had a chance to test the NEO 3M. I will try to get my hands on this trainer and conduct tests to find out more.
Including an 11-speed cassette is nice, but for a high-end trainer like this, I’d expect a 12-speed instead. The improved accuracy is not a dealbreaker. So basically, the only real improvement is the motion.
If you are looking for a high-end smart bike trainer, I recommend checking out my comparison between the NEO 3M and the Wahoo KICKR Move. These are direct competitors now.
