The presales for the Elves Vanyar Disc 2024 started on September 15, 2023. Vanyar is a popular Chinese road frame for climbers because of its low weight.
So, how does the Vanyar Disc 2024 differ from the previous one? I summarize all the differences in this article.
KEY TAKEAWAY
The main difference between Vanyar Disc 2022 and 2024 is that 2024 has wider tire clearance (28mm vs. 30mm), is a few dozen grams heavier, and has redesigned seat says. The geometry remained almost the same except for a lower head tube for a slightly more aggressive riding position. Vanyar Disc 2024 switched from pressfit BB to interlock and will only be available for disc brakes.

As you can see from the table, there are not many changes to the latest generation.
The geometry is almost the same as in the previous version. The only difference is the lower stack due to the shorter headtube. This means that the new version is slightly more aggressive than the previous one. Still, bikeinsights.com classifies the geometry of Vanyar frames as average.

What I believe will please many riders is the wider tire clearance. This has been increased from 28mm to 30mm. This is good news for those who prefer comfortable riding and wider tires. I admit that this clearance is a far cry from today’s endurance road bikes, but it’s still a welcome change.
Surprisingly, the new Vanyar is a few dozen grams heavier than the previous generation. I’m not sure if Elves has an error on their website, but if we’re talking about the whole frameset (frame, seatpost, handlebars), it’s a difference of up to 100g depending on frame size. And that’s not exactly small.

Personally, I like the new seat stays better than the old ones. They resemble those found on some high-end road bikes. While they’re still not as low as a Specialized SL7, they don’t connect to the frame at the top tube.
Another major change is the switch from the pressfit bottom bracket (BB86) to the interlock (BB386). I believe this will be appreciated by many bike builders and mechanics.
The last difference is the UCI certification. The Elves Vanyar 2022 was only certified for the rim version, not the disc version. The Vanyar 2024 will only be available for disc brakes and is UCI-approved. And, of course, it comes in new colors.

Conclusion
Despite the marketing claims, I was quite surprised by this frame update. We haven’t heard the old cycling industry song from Elves, such as “lighter, stiffer, and faster.”
Ups! I take it back. I just discovered the Vanyar 2024 product page that says:
โThe second generation Vanyar Pro continues the aggressive geometric design of the first generation, but now with an enhanced, sleek, fully integrated cockpit, delivering clean, modern lines, improved aerodynamics, and a lighter and stiffer frameset.โ
And then this in their brochure:
“The advanced Aero+ technology design has resulted in aerodynamic efficiency gains on the predecessor. The balance of stiffness, the result of a 10% stronger headtube, and enhanced aerodynamics has seen a gain of 40 seconds over 40km in testing, with improved pace, downhill speed, and handling.”
Anyway, I thought we’d get away from the marketing bullshit for once. These claims make no sense to me at all, as they directly contradict the specs of Vanyar frames Elves lists on their site.
What do you guys think about this update? Let me know in the comments.
