When to buy a bike trainer: A fictional product page with a discounted Wahoo KICKR trainer

CyclistsHub is supported by its readers. We may receive a commission if you buy products using our links (learn more).

If you are considering buying a smart bike trainer, it may pay off to wait for the right time of the year.

In this article, you learn when to buy a bike trainer so you save as much money as possible.

I also add a few tips on online stores that regularly discount bike trainers (and other cycling products).

Let’s save you some money!

What Is the Best Time to Buy a Bike Trainer?

The best time to buy a bike trainer is during Black Friday – Cyber Monday weekend. Online stores offer discounts of around 20% on expensive smart trainers. Discounts higher than 30% are pretty rare.

It usually doesn’t pay off to wait for better deals before or after Christmas. You may find some, but not as good as during the BFCM weekend.

What Is the Worst Time to Buy a Bike Trainer?

The worst times to buy a bike trainer are:

  1. Right after BFCM weekend, when the prices jump up to their previous levels.
  2. During the winter season when the prices can even exceed the average yearly price.
  3. Before the winter or off-season (excluding the BFCM weekend).

Where to Buy a Bike Trainer?

The short answer is: online.

There are plenty of reviews of bike trainers online, so you can choose the bike trainer you want and then look for the best deal.

Depending on where you live, it mostly pays off to buy from your local online stores, so you avoid import and extra shipping fees for bulky products. But not always.

For example, I live in the Czech Republic, but German stores offer lower prices and low shipping costs. So, I can save about 10% just by ordering there (without a discount) and about 25% (with a discount).

Below, I list a few online stores (mainly for the US and UK markets) where my readers shop and have good experiences.

REI.com

REI’s cycling products offer is wide. They sell bike trainers mainly from Wahoo, Tacx, Elite, and Saris.

When they published their Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals in 2021, they also discounted expensive bike trainers. So, I added the following info to my articles:

A 20% discount on the Wahoo KICKR that costs about $1,200? That’s a great deal!

You just had to purchase their lifetime membership for 20 USD to get deals like this. Please always double-check if their current deals apply to bike trainers because they are sometimes excluded!

CompetitiveCyclist.com

Competitive Cyclist also discounts bike trainers during the BFCM weekend. However, these discounts may be restricted to some trainer brands only (e.g., Saris, Elite).

Wiggle.com

If you live in the UK (or Europe), one of the places to look for deals is Wiggle. They have a dedicated Black Friday page where you can find deals on trainers from Tacx, Wahoo, LifeLine, Saris, Elite, and more.

Amazon

No list is complete without Amazon. However, from my experience, the deals are not as high as with other retailers.

But, there are many tools and websites like CamelCamelCamel.com where you can monitor the historical price and ensure you are buying at the right time.

WahooFitness.com

Wahoo Fitness runs sales on their products (not only bike trainers but also bike computers) during BFCM weekend.

If you miss the deals, you can check out their refurbished (reconditioned) bike trainers, which are about 10-20% cheaper than brand-new ones.

The reconditioned trainers have a 2-year warranty and are fully functional, so it is a pretty good deal.

When to Buy a Bike Trainer FAQ

Conclusion

Buy a bike trainer during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend. You will find discounts of around 20% on high-end bike trainers.

However, always double-check if discounts apply to the trainer you want to buy. Some trainers may be excluded.
