Winspace and its subsidiary brand, Lún, recently introduced a new line of wheels called MEGA.
I had the privilege of being among the few who received a pair for testing and reviewing. Just like with Winspace, they provided complete creative and editorial freedom.
But not everything went as expected. I found a serious manufacturing defect on the rear wheel.
Below, you’ll learn about it, the results of my in-house testing, my initial riding impressions, and how they compare to other Chinese carbon wheelsets.
You will also learn who these wheels are good for and whether they are worth the price.
Let’s dive in.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Lún MEGA D45 are the stiffest and fastest wheels I’ve ever ridden. They take time to get used to, especially when riding out of the saddle or cornering. I enjoyed riding them on smooth roads, flats, and rolling terrain, but they also performed well when climbing.
On the other hand, they are not very comfortable on harsh roads. Their eventual maintenance will be complicated due to HALO spokes and proprietary hubs. They are suitable for a narrow group of people.

Lún (Winspace) MEGA Summary
MEGA are flagship wheels designed for the most demanding cyclists. They boast a unique Halo spokes.
Halo spokes are a patented technology by Winspace. You can imagine them as two spokes in one, extending across the entire wheel.

They are connected to prevent any potential creaking at the points where they intersect. This design utilizes the properties of carbon, resulting in lower weight and, according to Lún, a 4% increase in stiffness.

On the other hand, even non-engineers like myself are curious about how the replacement process would work if needed (you will find out the answer below).
Lún offers their MEGA wheels:
- in one rim depth (46/54) (F/R)
- with in-house hubs (Lún MEGA Hubs)
- with Shimano, SRAM XDR, or Campagnolo freehub body

First Impressions and Unboxing
Lún MEGA wheels came in a branded black box. They took advantage of every opportunity to strengthen their branding.

My first impression was: “Wow, I’ve never seen wheels like these!” In fact, I did at Eurobike 2023 on day 2, but the Halo spokes make them special. The wheels reminded me of Lightweight Meilenstein wheels.
It’s also great that the tubeless rim tape was already installed, so I save time (and money) installing it.

In-House Tests
I always have high expectations from premium products. So, I conducted the following tests before I started using the wheels:
Lateral and Radial Trueness
I put both wheels on a truing stand and double-checked their lateral and radial trueness.
The front wheel was near perfect. However, the rear wheel was not 100% true. It seemed like the whole half of the lap had a weird offset. Unfortunately, I haven’t noticed the manufacturing defect yet.
On the other rear wheel, the centering was perfectly fine.
Spoke Tension
I guess centering these wheels is more complicated due to Halo spokes than centering standard wheels. But I might be wrong.
After measuring all spokes, only three exceeded the average spoke tension by more than 5%. That’s a decent result, but it’s not perfect. The following pictures provide more reference.

Here are the results for the second rear wheel. They are much worse than the first rear wheel. You will learn more about why I received it below.

Rim Centering (Dishing)
The dishing (how well-centered the hub is) ended well. The gap between the tool and the end caps was about a sheet of paper.

A Look from the Inside
Below, I add a few pictures of MEGA wheels from the inside. I found no resin residue or other manufacturing defects. Everything looked fine.

The Difficulty of Putting the Tire On
MEGA wheels are tubeless-ready, so as always, I tried to put my Tufo Comtura 4 TR 28mm tires on. I had a great experience with Lún HYPER and HYPER SE in this aspect, so how did the MEGA end?
Putting the tires on was so easy that I didn’t need tire levers. This was influenced by the fact that I had already used the tires for a few hundred miles (kilometers), so they were stretched out. But I also tried putting on new Tufo Comtura Prima 28mm tires, and it was also easy.
I could seat them with an air compressor and with a floor pump. This confirms my previous experience with HYPER series wheels. I wish all tubeless wheels would be so easy to seat. By the way, the tubeless tape has already been applied, and the wheels come with tubeless valves.

Riding Experience
Below, I share my findings on the manufacturing defect, ride experience, and a few thoughts on their practicality and maintenance.
An Unexpected Manufacturing Defect
Naturally, I couldn’t wait to try these wheels outside. My very first ride was a spontaneous time trial. I had a bad day and needed to “destroy myself.”
When putting the wheels on my bike, I noticed that aligning the disc brakes was more difficult than usual. I couldn’t get it to work 100%, and the rear brake was a bit jerky. I didn’t pay too much attention to it because I thought I had a crooked disc.
I subsequently replaced the MEGA with a HYPER SE, which I also needed to test. However, I noticed something strange when I returned to the MEGA after a few weeks.
I used the same discs as the HYPER SE but couldn’t get it to work even after tuning the rear brake for more than 15 minutes. Please note that I usually fine-tune it within a few minutes.
So, I replaced the disc and tried again. Again, the same problem. By this point, I was getting frustrated with aligning the disc itself. So I tried a third one and again, the same problem. And then it hit me. Something must be wrong with the wheel itself.
I took the wheel off and put it in the truing stand. I focused on examining the rear hub. The finding almost took my breath away. The rear hub was not spinning on its axis and was misaligned. See the short clips below.
I immediately contacted Winspace about this issue. They recalled the wheel and sent me a replacement. I asked what caused the defect. They replied with the following:
The manufacturing process of our hubs starts with forming, followed by rough machining. When we machined it down to an accuracy of 0.5mm, some iron filings were left behind, causing a sensor error in the machinery and resulting in a deviation.
We have already requested the factory to conduct a full inspection to ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
– Winspace
I am not an engineer (actually, I am, but in a different field, haha), but the accuracy of 0.5mm, e.g., for hubs, doesn’t seem that high to me. The important word is the “rough” machining. The hubs then undergo a few more steps during the manufacturing process.
Ride Impressions: Are They Too Stiff?
But let’s get back to the impressions from the ride. My first impression of the wheels was that they were extremely stiff. After my experience with other carbon-spoked wheels, I didn’t think pushing the stiffness any further was possible, but I was wrong.

The MEGA’s are the stiffest wheels I’ve tried so far. I noticed this stiffness even though I only weigh 67 kg. They’re so stiff that when riding out of the saddle, I have to use my hands more than usual to maintain balance. It’s hard to describe, but getting used to them took me a while.

The stiffness is also evident when cornering. They took me a while to get used to as they aren’t as compliant and carry me more in corners. It’s interesting to see how lateral stiffness affects handling.
So, high stiffness is exactly what most riders want, right? Well… not exactly. In my experience, the stiffer the wheels, the less comfortable they are, especially on bad county roads.
If I don’t want to be more tired than necessary after a three-hour ride and I want to enjoy it, I have to compensate for the high stiffness with lower pressures. I normally ride around 65 PSI but inflate 60 or less with the MEGA.
So if I just want to ride around in zone 2 and not worry about how fast I’m going, there’s no point in having those wheels. I prefer softer and more comfortable ones. Riding vibration fatigue isn’t discussed much but shouldn’t be forgotten. It’s treacherous and creeping.
NOTE: I initially tested MEGA wheels with YOELEO R12, which has a stiff rear end. After testing them with Winspace Agile, which can better absorb riding vibration thanks to dropped seat stays and a narrower seatpost, the ride comfort is much better.

As for terrain, I enjoy the MEGA, especially on flats, downhills, or rolling terrain. They keep their momentum and are fast. Feeling-wise, these are probably the fastest wheels I’ve ridden so far, faster than the Farsports Ventoux S 45mm, YOELEO SAT PRO 2022 50mm, or HYPER SE 23 D45. So, if you like to race, the MEGA wheels are worth considering.
However, the wheels also performed well on hills. I still prefer the lighter Elitewheels DRIVE 45mm for steep sections, but they are not as fast on the flats, so overall, I benefit more from the MEGA.

Are MEGA Wheels Practical?
When looking at MEGA wheels, the first thing that probably comes to mind is: How do you replace the spokes when they break? That’s a good question. You will basically have to contact Winspace and ask for spare HALO spokes or send them the entire wheel for spoke replacement.
If the hub fails, replacing it won’t be easy either, as Lún uses a proprietary hub. You won’t be able to rebuild the wheels using, e.g., DT Swiss hubs.
On the other hand, MEGAs at least allow you to replace the spokes, hub, or rim separately, unlike Lightweight Meilenstein wheels, which are one piece.
So, this is something to consider before buying unless you want to send the wheels back to China. If you prefer easy-to-service wheels, choose some with more common hubs (like those from DT Swiss), for example, YOELEO SAT PRO 2022.
Lún MEGA Alternatives
Lún MEGA wheels don’t have many Chinese alternatives (price-wise). They can easily compete with wheels of Western brands like Enve, Bontrager, Cadex, Zipp, etc. The table below shows the individual criteria of all wheels I tested and my rating.

My Verdict
Considering double the price of Lún HYPERs, it’s easy to ask: Are MEGA wheels two times better than HYPERs?
Of course, the answer is no. But that’s not the point. The point was to push the technological boundaries and appeal to different types of riders.
These wheels are suitable for racers, marginal gains hunters, and Lún fanboys who want the latest and greatest.
MEGA wheels are better than HYPERs in almost every aspect. As expected, they are also better than most $1000 Chinese wheels.
I mainly enjoyed their responsiveness every time I wanted to put the hammer down. They are fast on flats and roll great over small hills. I know the description couldn’t be more vague than this. But I’ve tested many carbon wheelsets, so you can trust my judgment.
On the other hand, you should remember that they are not as comfortable as softer wheels with steel spokes, especially if you have a stiff bike. At the same time, you may run into problems with replacing proprietary parts such as spokes and hubs.
It’s a shame that the wheels I received had an issue with the rear hub and had to be replaced. I am sure that people at Winspace scratch their heads and ask themselves how the rear wheel could pass the QC.
Fortunately, Lún is serious about building a successful brand and is prepared to face any potential warranty claims.
Considering my 10% discount, you can get MEGAs for $260 less ($2340). The shipping is included.

Well, $2600 for a Chinese wheelset, it’s a lot…
It depends to which wheels you compare them to. In comparison with Lightweight wheels, it’s actually a good price. 😅
