About Winspace

Winspace was founded in 2011. They develop and produce high-end carbon frames, wheels, and other accessories. They focus mainly on road and mountain bike wheels, frames, and accessories. Winspace also develops its parts like hubs and spokes. In 2020, they established an in-house brand called Lún. The word Lún means a “wheel” in Chinese.

Why Lún?

Some brands like Trek also established an in-house brand (Bontrager) for their wheels and accessories. One of the reasons for this is that loyal customers are not very willing to put another bike/frame manufacturer’s wheels on their bike. Let me give you an example.

Imagine you have a BMC bike that you equip with Trek wheels. It doesn’t make too much sense because these two brands are direct frame/bike competitors. But with Bontrager wheels, it is another story, although Bontrager is a brand owned by Trek.

The same applies to Winspace and Lún. Winspace also produces road bike frames, and Winspace owners think in the long term. Once Winspace gets better brand awareness among customers, they will (probably) not be so willing to use Winspace wheels for their bike made by another brand because of the reason I described above. If Lún is marketed as a wheel brand, this problem will disappear.

HYPER Wheels in Detail

HYPER wheels set the benchmark for quality Chinese wheels. Currently, there are HYPER 2020, HYPER 2023, and HYPER 23 SE.

Here are a few pictures of HYPER 2023 wheels.

And these are the HYPER 23 SE:

Main Features

  • UCI-approved
  • Rim depths available
    • HYPER 2020: 38, 50, and 65 mm
    • HYPER 2023 and 23 SE [front wheel / rear wheel]: 35/35, 46/54, 60/68mm
  • Rim width:
    • HYPER 2020: 19mm (internal), 26mm (external)
    • HYPER 2023 and 23 SE: 21mm (internal), ~28mm (external)
  • In-house developed hubs with ceramic bearings (HYPER 23 SE have steel bearings)
  • Type: Clincher (Tubeless-ready)
  • Carbon spokes (2.6g per spoke)
  • Freewheel compatible with Shimano 11spd cassette
  • Available in rim or disc brake option
  • Weight limit: 135kg

HYPER wheels look amazing, in my opinion. They are well-built, and even Hambini admitted he would be proud of putting his name on them.

This wheelset is available in various rim depths, so you can choose shallow rims for climbing, medium ones for various terrains, and deep ones for flats. Of course, HYPER come in options for rim or disc brakes.

Winspace also developed its own hub with ceramic bearings that decrease the resistance. This translates to smooth rolling and minimizes energy losses.

Is the hype surrounding these wheels justified? Well, it seems so. I was fortunate enough to ride them; they are great (read my HYPER wheels review).

Reviewers like Peak Torque, Charles Ouimet, and many more agree that these wheels are on another level in this price range. And they are competitive with more expensive wheels as well.

However, no product is perfect, and HYPER wheels also have some disadvantages. I noticed worse crosswind stability of HYPER 2020 than with other Chinese wheels (e.g., Elitewheels DRIVE, Farsports Ventoux S).

HYPER rim wheelset comes with QR skewers, tubeless rim tape, tubeless valves, valve extenders, and brake pads. The HYPER disc with tubeless rim tape, tubeless valves, and valve extenders.

Overall, HYPER are perfect for highly demanding riders who want well-made, quality, and nice-looking carbon wheels that don’t cost a fortune.

Lún Road Series Wheels in Detail

Lún wheels are not as well-known yet. I think they are a little underrated. Below, I explain why.

Main Features

  • UCI-approved
  • Rim depths available are 30, 45, and 60 mm
  • Rim width 19 mm (internal), 25 mm (external)
  • In-house developed hubs
  • Type: Clincher (Tubeless-ready)
  • Pillar spokes and steel bearings OR Sapim spokes and ceramic bearings (+$100)
  • Freewheel compatible with Shimano 11spd cassette
  • Available in rim or disc brake option
  • Available with white or black decals
  • Weight limit: 120kg

Lún Road Series wheels are more affordable than HYPERs. In fact, they are about $400 cheaper than HYPERs. They also look great (or at least I like them), but the design is not the important feature most of us look for when buying a pair of carbon wheels. So, what about the other features?

As HYPERs, Lún wheels are also available in 3 rim depths (30, 45, and 60 mm) and in options for rim and disc brakes. The main difference is that Lún wheels come with steel Pillar spokes and steel bearings OR with steel Sapim spokes and ceramic bearings. The second option is for a $100 upgrade.

The Pillar aero spokes and steel bearings combine Pillar 1420 and 1432 spokes depending on the drive/non-drive side. The Sapim spokes (Sapim CX-Ray and CX-Sprint) also have an aero profile to decrease air resistance. Is the $100 upgrade worth it, then?

Well, it is a good question that I cannot answer. Some testing would need to be done to see which spokes feel more responsive and stiffer. When writing this article, I did not find any comparison of Lún with Sapim vs. Pillar spokes. However, on average, the wheelset with Sapim spokes is 20g lighter than with Pillar spokes.

Although the Lún wheelsets come in different rim depths, they are about 150g heavier than HYPERs.

Another small difference is that you can choose the decal color (white or black) of the Lún wheels.

Lún wheels are not as widespread as HYPER yet, so less information and reviews are available. However, if Winspace engineers took the best from their HYPERs, I believe that Lún Road Series are suitable for riders who want to upgrade their current wheels but have a limited budget.

Winspace FAQ

My Verdict

There is no doubt that Winspace belongs to one of the leading Chinese carbon manufacturers. The quality of their products speaks for itself.

If you can’t decide whether to go for HYPER 2023, HYPER 2020, or Lún Road Series wheels, let me help you.

Buy:

  • HYPER 2023 if money is not a problem for you and you prefer wider rims (more suitable for 28mm tires). These “Hambini-approved” wheels are lightweight, stiff, and fast. They can compete with wheels from mainstream brands that are several times more expensive.
  • HYPER 2020 if you don’t mind a narrower rim and want to save a few bucks.
  • HYPER 23 SE if you prefer steel bearings. These wheels currently provide the best value for the money of all wheelsets Lún offers.
  • Lún Road Series became pretty much irrelevant after the introduction of HYPER SE (HYPER 23 SE) wheels.
